Unaspected planets in your birth chart are like wild, untamed animals within your psyche. They can “run away with your horoscope,” becoming a defining trait within your personality whether you approve or not.

Unaspected planets, referred to as peregrine planets by Noel Tyl, are those planets in your natal chart that lack any Ptolemaic aspect (i.e. conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition) with any other planet.
Guidelines for Interpreting Unaspected Planets

Unaspected planets do not connect with the rest of the psyche – much like someone in a foreign land, it is disconnected from the surroundings, and integration becomes challenging.

This can be mirrored as a feeling of disconnection in outer relationships, especially if a key body such as Sun or Moon is unaspected. With unaspected Sun or Moon, there may be a feeling that the world doesn’t quite understand you. You may “march to a different drummer.”

Unaspected planets can function either as strong talents or excessive, overcompensatory habits: For example, unaspected Mercury could suggest someone whose emphasis on thoughts or speech is pronounced, like the writer Norman Vincent Peale, who wrote “The Power of Positive Thinking.” However, it could also suggest someone that talks incessantly out of nervous habit.

Unaspected Sun: Intensified Ego Drive
A person with unaspected Sun tends to march to a different drumbeat. There can be strong emphasis on self expression and leadership, as well as a strong need for ego recognition.
Unaspected Moon: Possible Emotional Disconnection
Natal Moon with no major aspects tends to magnify the needs represented by Moon’s sign. A good example is Steve Jobs, who had unaspected Moon in Aries (“the need to be Number One”). Unaspected Moon possibly suggests emotional disconnection from the parents, and later from other people. There may also be a need to express a caring, nurturing or educational behavior in order to connect with the world.
Unaspected Mercury: Hyperactive Mind
Unaspected Mercury tends to emphasize an overactive mind, which could result in nonstop talking, thinking, or worrying. Summary: Integrating Unaspected Planets
Unaspected planets can be hard to tame. Integrating the unaspected planet into our psyche may feel like trying to have a tall Westerner blend in with a crowd of Japanese people – it can’t help but stand out.
Rather than trying to make unaspected planet conform to a social norm, you may want to find a challenging outlet for its energy – be it writing a book, learning a foreign language, forming a nonprofit organization, or practicing martial arts. With positive direction, unaspected planets can become your strongest asset.

Do you have any unaspected planets in your birth chart? The qualities of a planet are exposed in potentially constructive ways. There are two theories about unaspected planets (those that lack any Ptolemaic aspect [i.e. conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition] with any other planet in the birth chart). One theory is that the unaspected planet has difficulty expressing some of its qualities. It sits in the chart without any major connection to other planets. The other line of thought is the interpretation preferred by noted astrologer Noel Tyl, which is the preferred interpretation these days. Being unaspected can make the planet a more powerful force, as it screams for attention among all of the other planetary aspects. The individual might not realize its expression in their behavior, but others recognize it unmistakably. Unaspected planets can function as strong talents. They can also express as excessive, over-compensatory habits.
Transits will make aspects to the unaspected planet at times, which can excite and stimulate it into action. The individual can have a hard time controlling the unaspected planet’s traits at those times.
Unaspected Sun
With an unaspected Sun in the natal chart, both its strengths and challenges can increase. The person’s charisma is strengthened and this can facilitate success. The Sun’s negative features can also prevail. These include social maladjustment, paralyzed willpower, unawareness of one’s rude behavior, self-centeredness, egoism, and vanity.
Unaspected Moon
With an unaspected Moon in the natal chart, more than any other unaspected planet, it endows the individual’s changing disposition with charismatic powers. The unaspected Moon can lead an individual to express themselves without restraint or to shut themselves away in their inner world. Hypersensitivity can leave the individual vulnerable to fleeting impressions or to stimuli barely perceptible to other people.
Unaspected Mercury
Mercury is seldom unaspected in a chart since it’s never very far from the Sun and Venus. With an unaspected Mercury in the natal chart, the individual’s nature can be quick, unstable, and changeable. The intellectualism and the nervousness that Mercury naturally bestows might blow up out of proportion. What can be beneficial about an unaspected Mercury is less inclination to become scattered and distracted, compared with a heavily-aspected Mercury.
Unaspected Venus
Venus is seldom unaspected in a chart since it’s never very far from the Sun and Mercury. With an unaspected Venus in the natal chart, there can be alternating outbursts of emotions and heightened material and sensual desires. Venus’ charm and kindness are less pronounced than with a well-aspected Venus.
Unaspected Mars
With an unaspected Mars in the natal chart, the effects are without doubt the most noticeable among the ten unaspected planets. Mars’ very nature is synonymous with action, aggression, and anger. Sexuality, too. Unaspected Mars sometimes activates the aggressive and quick-tempered side of the individual’s nature. When Mars is unaspected, there is always a concrete impact. The energy tends to be directed outward. It is usually direct, visible, and instant.
Unaspected Jupiter
With an unaspected Jupiter in the natal chart, there can be an emphasis on philosophy, education, and an international or spiritual dimension. This suggests a mind hungry for higher learning. Jupiter naturally seeks out social interaction. With unaspected Jupiter, there can be a tendency towards solitude.
Unaspected Saturn
With an unaspected Saturn in the natal chart, individuals might experience inhibition, inferiority complex, melancholy, and failures. On the positive side, unaspected Saturn can also suggest intensified ambition.
Unaspected Uranus
Most astrologers agree that when one of the trans-Saturn planets (Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto) is unaspected in a chart, its collective nature limits its scope. With an unaspected Uranus in the natal chart, there can be periods of compulsion for freedom and independence, with a strong taste for whatever is original, even fringe. Passions can prompt the individual to rebel. There can be an overwhelming urge for achieving social significance.
Unaspected Neptune
With an unaspected Neptune in the natal chart, it might express as heightened aesthetic sensitivity and strong ideals. It can also bring paranormal gifts and moments of mystical ecstasy. Neptune is the planet of mysticism, intuition, imagination, and faith. It is also the planet of depravity and addiction to forbidden substances. Unaspected Neptune can result in moments of doubt, confusion, and indefinable disturbances.
Unaspected Pluto
With an unaspected Pluto in the natal chart, it can suggest prominence, power, and influence. The individual sometimes feels very strong impulses that they cannot escape. As astrologer Bil Tierney notes, Pluto is the planet of the isolationist. Individuals with unaspected Pluto can be distant and remote. They can relish in standing apart from others. Unaspected Pluto is associated with periodic spurts of obsessive or compulsive behavior.
Looking at Tomorrow — Progression Techniques

There are many astrologically based factors that play into providing information when one is looking at what is happening and/or could be potentially happening at present and future times. I am not intending to go into any detail or offer any general approaches. I do, however, want to share some specific parameters that I have found useful when looking at the present and potential futures.
HUBER AGE PROGRESSION:
The Hubers developed an Age Progression Method which acts like a clock. The clock starts on the AC at birth and travels around the 360 degrees of the individual horoscope in 72 years. The movement of the Age Clock provides an overview of the cyclic unfolding of your life. It is surprisingly simple forecasting tool, and the use of it will likely convince you of its effectiveness. Again, it works best with the Koch House system. The clock actually moves through the twelve houses in a counter-clockwise direction, first through the 1st House, and then the 2nd, and so on. It spends 21/3 years in each house so its degree movement per year changes with each house. Quoting the Hubers: “At the ascendant, the human being is born. At the IC the human being becomes an adult and normally leaves the childhood home. At the DC, the “you-space”, he is confronted with the environment or with a partner. At the MC he matures to full individuality and finally returns to the AC and to himself.” When the age point conjuncts any planet, the themes of that planet come into high focus and situations are encountered that have to do directly with the qualities and energies of that planet. The same is true for the passage of the age clock through each house. The Hubers two “Life Clock” books go into great detail on this subject.
Rudyhar’s Cycle of Individual Destiny
“Astrology of Personality” (pg 216-217). Please also see the “RUDYHAR WHEEL” at the end of this article. Three periods: from physical birth to the age of twenty-eight; then from what ought to be the psycho-mental birth (28) to 56; finally, from this potential third or spiritual birth to the end (84). The nature of Man is threefold: body, soul, spirit. Moreover, these three cycles form the true basis for the ancient idea of first-born, twice-born and thrice-born. But popular Brahmanism accelerated the occasion of the second birth for easily understandable, practical purposes. During the first 28 years, man perfects (always theoretically) his physio-psychological body, or better his race-self. He fulfills his ancestry and the past of his family and race. Then he emerges as a new-born individual self. Having discriminated, selected, rejected and chosen, out of what the past of mankind offered to him, the foundation for his own individuality, he builds on the foundation of this past (for every temple must have a foundation). The structure of his individual selfhood. Finally, if this structure is at all completed, he reaches at the age of fifty-six the point where the universal Spirit is born within him-the third or spiritual birth”.
Rudhyar then goes on to break down each 28-year cycle into 7-year sub cycles for each level. The first seven years see the development of the power of self-awareness, or intuition – as seen by C.G. Jung. i.e. it is a completely subjective world with intuition rather than objective perception. The next seven years are focused on self-expression of that new self. We then cross the axis to awareness of others. The next seven years are focused on the awareness of others at whichever level we are working on. The final seven years of each cycle are focused on the expression of others. One can further break down these 7-year sub-cycles to the 2 1/3 years in each house within each quadrant.
We must remember that each of these cycles is theoretical. The 2nd cycle of psycho-mental birth into the individual self may or may not be either attempted or completed. Rudyhar uses the analogy the fruit falling to the ground at 28. Most do not take root but, instead, become fruit for the tree. Some, however, do take root and become new trees. This simply describes the many that simply confirm to the race-pattern of consciousness moving forward in their lives while the few begin their path to individual consciousness and path.
CYCLE OF POTENTIAL TRANSFORMATION TO INDIVIDUAL SELF: 27.5–29.5 yrs:
THERE ARE THREE MAJOR CYCLE RETURNS: TRANSITING SATURN, PROGRESSED MOON & RUDYHAR CYCLE. These cycles are not timed to specific external dates. They are more psychological and about life change transitions.

Rudyhar Cycle at 28 years as described above. (This also works for the other 3 angular points)

The progressed Moon returns to natal position at between 27.5-29 years, depending on its daily speed at birth.

Transiting Saturn also makes its return to natal position at between 27.5-29.5 years depending on times of retrograde movement.
These three cycles will coincide during that band of time making it a very pivotal period always creating changes in one’s life path.
33 - CHRIST YEAR
At age 33 transiting Saturn comes into conjunction to the Solar Arc Directed Saturn. I have found that this is a time when one can benefit by a look in the rear-view mirror. How are things going for the changes that were put into place around age 27.5-29.5? Were those decisions good and/or appropriate? Do adjustments need to be made.
CYCLE OF POTENTIAL TRANSFORMATION TO SPIRITUAL SELF: 55-58 YRS:
Not only does the Rudhyar 3rd Cycle begin here, we also find the second cycle return of both the progressed moon and transiting Saturn.
SECONDARY PROGRESSION:
I use this method of progressing the planets. It uses the concept of a year for a day. Each day of transiting movement of the planets is equal to one year of progressed movement. The placement and passage of the planets using this approach is, along with the transits of planets is primary to forecasting. The movement of both the AC and MC should also be followed.
PROGRESSED MOON: The progressed Moon is important as it passes over planets and other important points in the Chart. Aspects to the Sun are important and, of course conjunctions, oppositions and squares are energized times as are passes over the four angles. The progressed Moon acts as a trigger for timing events and situations tied to its exact aspects to the various points and planets and house passages.
TRANSITS OF PLANETS:
Although meaning can be gleaned from the aspects created by the passage of all the transiting planets through the natal horoscope, the slower the movement of a planet, the more dramatic the aspect are when they occur. I find that movement of personal planets is not too relevant in terms of growth, development and transformation. Saturn and the Transpersonal planets offer more impact as they pass over points and planets. The movement of one’s Ruling Planet, especially if a slower moving one, should be carefully watched. Outer planets also have specific meaning as they pass through each quadrant.
SOLAR ARC DIRECTED PROGRESSION:
The use of Solar Arc Directed movement provides good additional information when looking into movement of the chart for forecasting purposes. Aspects between Solar Arc Directed planets and the natal planets is the most critical although aspects between them and either secondary progressed planets or transiting planets add to any set of events to utilize in forecasting. Here also the movement of the AC and MC should be followed.
ECLIPSES:
“Current events” analysis involves progressing the planets & following the transits, among many other significators. It also involves checking the houses that the current eclipses are passing thru. You will find that the cycle of eclipses moves in a clockwise fashion thru the houses. It is always a theme involving the polarity of houses, moving from 1/7 to 12/6 to 11/5, etc. To me this signifies the area of the individual’s life that is being worked on and changed or amended. The themes seem to follow each other naturally. 1/7 is about our awareness of Self/Other and how this might need amendment. Then we move to 12/6 and the need to grapple with issues of work/service/health as they play into this now amended focus of awareness. Here we are working to reduce limitations placed on us by ourselves and the world. How do we best work and serve ourselves and others as we struggle with the new awareness. As we move on to 11/5 we confront the issues of how to express and/or create or bring into form this amended awareness. We are looking into what form we wish to create and how to bring into being or form this desired change or amendment of self. Onward to 10/4 and the actual stamping of change cemented into place. The issue here is the actual new formation in both the inner self and the image of self in the outer world at large. 10/4 has to accept and deal with what it has wrought so to speak. We then move to 3/9 where we focus on and deal with the influx of facts/data/info. and new personal visions that it creates. We now find it timely to be communicating these to self and the world. This communication/new vision then, as we move to 2/8, reforms the bedrock of our values and the new utilizations of the assets of self and in relation to those of the important others in our world. This then brings us back to where we started so to speak, where in 1/7 we are now working to again amend our awareness of self/others in our then current individual environment.
So, where we find eclipses by house speaks to the area of life that is being affected. Now, when we find specific planets being aspected by eclipse points, we can bring in the themes of the planet being touched, realizing that in a sense this is symbolic of the collective working thru us individually directly thru this planet. The themes of the planet, as it works in the individual chart, are brought to the fore. I find that tight orbs are necessary for this. Much past 4 degrees does not seem to be felt as strongly. The closer the orb, the stronger the effect. Also, I tend to focus primarily on the conjunction, opposition & square. These are the aspects of activity/stress/action.
I remember somewhere reading about how, in times of old when astrologers were the interpreters of the the higher realms for kings, that the Sun & Moon as the lights symbolized those in power. As such, the issue was “when the light goes out, and then returns, something has happened to the person in power. Things are never quite the same” Maybe this will give a bit of flavor to all this.
SOLAR RETURN CHART:
The use of a solar return chart in conjunction with the above methods of moving the chart is critical in adding to the information of any year in question. I cast the Solar Return chart, use its houses as the primary set for the chart construction, and then use the natal planets placed outside of that wheel to complete the Chart. I am using the example of this year for me below because it is such a perfect example of how once can tune into what is being shown as the focus for the year in question. I have always cast this chart for myself every year and suggest the same for everyone.
RUDYHAR WHEEL
Another example is the Pluto in Anne Frank’s Inner Chart. I consider the semi-sextile aspects as being active so that Pluto is not unaspected in my work. I view Pluto as part of an EYE figure, which is part of a Magic Cap Figure in her Inner Chart. As the apex of the EYE, Pluto is the basic theme and focal point for all the information that is being gtathered by the EYE rim planets Sun/Mercury and Mars. I find this a much better description of what was going on in that 12th house attic she was living in than to try to explain it by describing the Pluto as unaspected. Here is that chart:
