Aspect Figures in Astrology
Aspect Figures are geometric structures that are created by the linkage of multiple aspects between multiple planets, or points that create a closed structure. Those figures illustrate how those planets are interacting in one's life. Different Aspect Figures work in different ways. Just as we find in life, Aspect Figures describe complex energy relationships. Coming to an understanding of how those energy relationships work in your life — as well as visualizing how possible alternatives might be available — helps to build upon life's possibilities. It also potentially creates a more holistic result in using the astrological language to interpret one's unique abilities and potential.
When all aspects and Aspect Figures in a chart are viewed together, an Overall Chart Pattern, having its own meaning, is formed.
All of this information, offered in symbolic form, can be utilized in pragmatic and practical ways to describe both basic life motivation and more specific life functions. These motivations and functions work in both the internal and external worlds, as evidenced by both the Inner and Outer Charts. Working with the various possibilities offers the potential for reaching a better understanding of ways to build upon one's personal growth and self-development.
Overall Aspect Patterns
The Overall Aspect Pattern type is determined by analyzation of the chart inclusive of all Aspect Figures. Any overall Aspect Pattern type, if applicable in any specific chart, will illustrate an innate attitude toward life, one's initial and primary motivational approach to life's events. This personal philosophy will be only partly known or even unconscious. Is the overall chart pattern linear, triangular, quadrangular, or mixed? Knowledge of a specific type is foundational. Is one's foundational motivation the need for movement and action, one who observes and searches for meaning, or one seeking security and stability? This basic motivational approach to life is separate from the individual aspect figures meanings. Once the basic motivations are met, or if that pattern can be utilized in specific actions, then the person becomes more open to the opportunities available within specific aspect figures.
Specific Aspect Figures
The individual aspect figures found within the chart are grouped below by shape. Each aspect figure image is linked to a full description from my book "The Astrological World of Aspect Figures."
Linear Aspect Figures
Open structures
Linear Aspect Figures are simply a single line between two planets or points, or multiple connected lines creating no closed structure. There is a strong focus on a goal, getting it done, but what is getting done is dependent on the aspect color. Red aspects are focused on action, activity involving getting something done, based on the energy of the planets involved. Blue aspects are actively accumulating talents and resources that they can create by combining energies. Green aspects are focused on thinking and processing; they are consciously attempting to figure out how to best combine the energies of the planets involved.
There is some form of difficulty needing resolution in blending the planets with green aspects. With red, the intent is to want to actively enjoy utilizing the combined energy of the planets. With blue, the desire is to enjoy building their talents. With green, the intent is to be able to utilize the combined energy of the planets, if possible. When one is utilizing linear aspects, they are simply attempting to "enjoy" their use.
Triangular Aspect Figures
Twelve different figures
Singular triangular aspect structures are defined by the colors comprising their structure. All Red triangles have the character of "Efficiency/Performance," being full of energy. They enjoy reaching specific achievement goals. All Blue triangles are called "Talent" triangles. They are full of talent that is available for use. They enjoy that talent with flowing blue aspects. They are relaxed. Blue and Red triangles are "Ambivalent," moving between relaxation and action. Red and Green triangles are called "Irritational," constantly bouncing between activity and adjustment, always thinking, never finding rest. The three colored triangular structures are called "Learning" triangles. They can complete processes leading to building on energies.

Quadrangular Aspect Figures
Twenty-nine different figures
These are singular four-sided closed structures. Smaller figures that do not encompass the center have a theme that does not directly involve the central Core. They will represent an area of activity important to the individual but not necessarily dominant. Larger quadrangular structures can dominate a chart, especially if they encompass the center. They will either be the singular statement or one major statement in the chart. Most polygons include triangles within them, which allows the use of their specific nature to be part of the process of resolution being reached for in the quadrangular figure. The one consistent element to all quadrangular aspect figures is the desire to not just achieve a goal, but to build upon the overall purpose of the structure with each goal that is achieved, to use the tools that come with each achievement to build upon the purpose.
Again, the colors comprising the structure define the type of energy. They can be all Red "Achievement" (Grand Square) but not all Blue or all Green. They can be only Red and Blue ("Ambivalence"); Red and Green ("Irritational"); but not only Blue and Green. They can and often do have all three colors and are much more functionally successful when all three colors are present. There is always more than one process at work, given that smaller aspect figures are always found within the structure.
